Your system information

  • Steam client version: package ver 1461972496, built 2016-04-29, API v017
  • Distribution: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I took the hardware survey.

It should have detected and submitted my default sound card.

Instead, it submitted a SigmaTel STAC9721,23. I guess this might be either my motherboard's built-in sound device or one of my USB sound devices, but it is definitely not the default sound device. The hardware survey is therefore not representing the hardware that is actually being used.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Take the hardware survey on a linux system whose default sound card is not the one built-in to the motherboard.

The steam survey is expected to report the default alsa device, not the current pulseaudio device or any other device reported by audio middleware.

Then it's clearly a bug, because the device it's reporting is not the default ALSA device.

2022 and this is still an issue. Steam continually tries to use my video cards as sound output, does not use pulse, just seems to arbitrarily pick the 0th card in alsa, despite it not being default
