I left my desktop downloading Grid Autosport and afterwards steam was running no more and it doesn t start

I tried every possible fix no one works. Are there any fix upstream??

This is strange because something similar happens with spotify in rpm distros and they use compat-libgcrypt.

I tried reseting the steam runtime.

Every runtime re-installed again same crash.
How can I opt-in for beta test in the registry.vdf,?? maybe I have better luck with the beta client.

Getting the same crash on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Everything worked fine for ages, this afternoon I opened Steam and it wouldn't launch, also my steamapps/common folder has gone missing, and Steam didn't recognize my computer upon login. The usual trick of deleting or symlinking the Steam Runtime libraries so it uses the system versions didn't work. Deleting them actually caused them to be redownloaded straight away upon next launch

I also had to rename libstdc++ in the steam-runtime using

~/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu> mv libstdc++.so.6 libstdc++.so.6.bak

That's because otherwise mesa cannot load correctly. That's because Steam-Runtime uses GCC 4.8 and my system (and all system libraries) uses GCC5 or newer with different ABI. And I think that's the root of the problem. (see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-runtime/issues/31 for solution)

It got fixed in my box I downgraded steam to 1.0.0.45 reinstalled the runtime once again and that fixed it. And I also did a system upgrade (zypper dup).

I don't know maybe downgrading the gcc libs to 4.8 helped ??

I dont have any problems on Arch Linux. I have mesa 12.0.X and removed some libs:

On OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, I just got the new update this morning, ran steam --reset and then find ~/.local/share/Steam/ \( -name "libgcc_s.so*" -o -name "libstdc++.so*" -o -name "libxcb.so*" -o -name "libgpg-error.so*" \) -print -delete and the Steam client launched fine that launch, but after closing and launching again I'm back to getting segfault errors.

@wyqydsyq There are two distinct issues here. one is long standing issue with libstdc++ which the removal of those files works around. This segfault is a separate issue, but need to fix both in order to have it work.

My repo for myself and friends has a Mesa built against libnettle which can be used by others until this is resolved elsewhere.

Or maybe it is fixed by Mesa package home:pontostroy:X11, which I'm using for my Intel Skylake GPU 530.

On opensuse 42.1 the problem still persists.

Thanks @boombatower, using your repository I'm able to run Steam without issues. Hopefully Valve gets around to updating their runtime libraries to be compatible with modern distros, or even better implement a way to have Steam default to using system libs and only use Steam Runtime libs as a fallback if the needed library isn't installed globally, I'm sure many of these issues wouldn't happen if we had an option like that.

It would be great if Valve enabled wikis on this GH repository, that way people like yourself could put solutions/work-arounds like this in a more visible place than buried in an issue thread.

I've just tried to launch steam (first time) on a openSUSE TW installation which wasn't updated in 1 month; steam ended up with the same segfault. I've upgraded openSUSE and nothing has changed. This laptop has an Intel graphics chip, where my PC has a AMD Radeon one. So, what has changed in recent steam updates that broke it in openSUSE when it was pretty stable for months? What is the point of libnettle in Mesa?

Same issue on Ubuntu 16.04. Steam crashed after I clicked on enqueue button for Terraria update in downloads page. Now when I try to open Steam I get the same Segmentation Fault.

I could fix the problem after reading the comments from marekolsak at bug https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4504
Basically all you have to do is build nettle 32bit version and rebuild mesa. Turns out, even nettle isn't a dependency of mesa, if it's available, it builds against it and finally fixes this bug.

@rosmanov: Hmm, well in order to fix the problem i did (re)build a lot of packages. Don't know exactly what else must be set in order fix it. However, a few tips which might help you. Aside nettle i also rebuild (and enabled 32bit) for following packages:
net-libs/gnutls abi_x86_32
dev-libs/libgpg-error abi_x86_32
dev-libs/libgcrypt abi_x86_32
dev-libs/gmp abi_x86_32
I've also switched from openssl to gnutls for the CURL_SSL provider for the packages net-misc/curl

I am getting what i think is a similar issue on Opensuse 13.2 64bit with Intel GPU. I am not having and issue with my machine with Nvidia GPU.

Oddly enough i tried that and i am waiting for Boombatower to rejoin the IRC to let them know as they have been assisting me in a bug with OpenBroadcastSystem Studio of which he maintains on Packman.

Same here. I recompile mesa3d and some packages from @mm1ke comment, but it's not solution.
Why helped partially? Client crashes every time, when uses "autologin". Without it and use auth(pass&code) - crash dissapeared. I don't know, why.

The issue on my machine (Thinkpad T400) happens regardless of if i check the "Remember me" check box.

Edit... I didnt have this issue on the Thinkpad T500. Same specs , OS as well as program versions with the only difference being size, Hard drive size and ram.

Can anyone confirm whether this issue affects users of the NVidia proprietary driver or not?

@rombert What i can confirm is this is hitting a machine with an Intel MHD4500 IGP. so far none of my Nvidia based machines have been effected, but i dont have any that run Optimus/Bumblebee.

I decided to give it a shot and on my desktop using a 750Ti with the binary blob the issue is not present.

I've removed steam's folder from home dir twice, and this won't happen. I can't confirm this anymore.
Steam is running fine on Arch and Mint with a single NVidia GTX750 (proprietary driver).

I confirm exactly what murkdum sees. Also opensuse Tumbleweed x64 oss drivers (radeon+radeonsi).
However on a more bleeding edge system (pontostroy repo with git mesa+llvm) with amdgpu+radeonsi this does not happen... So maybe the fix is already in mesa or llvm git. Or it only affects radeon-kernel-driver+steam 1.0.0.52. With 1.0.0.51 all was fine.

@tomtomme pontostroy has commented on one of theses issues (ie is aware of the problem) and has the same fix in his Mesa-git --with-sha1=libnettle \.

First it was the issues with radeon, which ubuntu also has. After fixing that, there is this error now. Tried to contact Steam support, but it's like trying to stick a stone to a wall of bricks

@murkdum I have no issue on Nvidia based system but it is an issue with an Intel gpu based system. I think it is not related to the gpu.

It's related to mesa opensource drivers. openSUSE maintainers just made it clear they're not "fixing" this bug applying the workarround (using compile flag --with-sha1=libnettle):

I've been using @boombatower's repo he mentioned in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4537#issuecomment-231567856 on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for the last month+ and have had zero issues on my System76 Gazelle w/ Intel 4th gen i7 without a dedicated GPU.

It isn't a fix but it is a functional workaround, I've had plenty of updates for Steam games and the client itself and it's kept working through them. By using that repo you effectively get mesa with libnettle so in practice it's not really different to if OpenSUSE maintainers made this change upstream.

So I'd say just use that repo until Valve actually fix this issue, it's certainly a lot faster and easier than hopping distro. @Plagman are there any plans to fix this in the near future? I'm sure you guys are working on something but some better communication from Valve devs on what's going on would be appreciated.

My repo @wyqydsyq mentioned has a couple line diff against proper Mesa for Tumbleweed and automatically rebuilds anytime the main package rebuilds assuming it can merge the couple line diff. Since I am using it, a number of friends, and folks here if it ever breaks rest assured I'll tweak it.

Valve ain't moving a muscle. Ill add the repo and try the workaround

I got that message a long while ago along. Basicly if you are not using streamOS or Ubuntu you get no love from Valve.

It's an issue they're going to need to address eventually anyway; Ubuntu isn't going to sit on the same library versions forever. We're just experiencing this because we're using a distro that updated sooner.

Ubuntu 16.04 is reporting the same error. But it's in a chroot environment so not sure whether to blame the guest distro or the host.

@quarckster shame, ive marked the bug as duplicate of 988273. The solution must come from the community, since valve ain't moving a muscle.

Come on Valve, update your steam runtime package versions. This bug has been around for a really long time now. Or do something to improve compatibility for those of us who are stuck? Using a workaround like a home repository for an entire set of core packages is not a good thing at all, both in terms of security and reliability. I use this laptop in college so I can't afford to risk breaking it, which is far more likely with a home repo.

For those on openSUSE Tumbleweed there is a workaround that has hit factory and will land in TW soon. I'll be sure to test it out by removing hacked Mesa build and seeing if Steam is still happy. For those interested in the details see: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=988273#c24.

It was mentioned in review of the week in opensuse-factory list: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-09/msg00397.html so I looked it up. This appears related to the github issue by a suse member with the openssl patches. Since Valve didn't say much on that issue it looks like they decided to just provide a proper workaround.

For those using my tumbleweed++ repo, assuming it works as expected I will remove the package from my repo which means you will automatically switch back to the default Mesa package when you update even if you do not remove my repo. I'll wait a week or so to make sure a few other people confirm it works on their system.

To remove my repo (if you added per my command):

zypper rr tumbleweed++

or disable:

zypper mr --disable tumbleweed++

@boombatower What about those of us on 13.2 or leap?

Assuming it fixes the issue it would simply be a matter of porting the openssl fix to leap which I would imagine is on the radar, but I'll followup (as I'm not the one who made the fix) once it's confirmed by various parties on TW.

I can also confirm the released snapshot 20160924 fixes the problem. This only works if you are using the steam package instead of some manual install. It will bring in libopenssl1_0_0-steam and libopenssl1_0_0-steam-32bit along with some additions to /usr/bin/steamruntime-fix that was already there to fix libstd issues. :)

For non-openSUSE users: SUSE pushed the change upstream into openssl so presumably Valve will eventually rebuild Steam against it and include in runtime, but otherwise I imagine other distros can copy the SUSE workaround. openSUSE++

Interestingly, I seem to get the following when launching a game (dota2 in this case). Even when disabling overlay it seems to still load lib and fail.

libnettle Mesa seems to workaround this. Perhaps the patch openssl libs are not be loaded with applications launched from steam?

EDIT: I believe this is due to the fix not taking into account the non-intuitive directory structure of steamruntime.

@boombatower this is expected with the steam overlay because both the 32 bit and 64 bit steam overlay libraries are preloaded at the start of a steam game, one silently works and the other is rejected as incompatible. It is a harmless message.

SR: correct replacement of 64bit openssl libraries in steamruntime.

From what I would assume this will only negatively affect 64bit games that use openssl libs (since that was the incorrect symlink). Either way this fixes that as well.

@boombatower I too have the same error launching Dota2. Can we expect a fix in coming days?

@GreatBigWhiteWorld My fix was accepted and forwarded to factory. As such I would expect it to be in 20160930. You can also apply the diff above to /usr/bin/steamruntime-fix to avoid waiting.

After some interest and further suggestions from some folks in IRC I have started steamtricks fashioned after winetricks. The goal being to take fixes like this, and much more, and provide a proper upstream for them. I built a modified steam package for openSUSE that utilizes steamtricks.

The current version optionally includes the openssl lib replacement, but not the compiled library itself. Other distros will a) need to build something similar to openssl-steam, and b) configure constants at the top of steamtricks if they do not like the expected location. The openssl-steam by openSUSE has a single revert patch applied over the standard openssl package (I believe - need to double check).

I stubbed out some issues and hope to see some of the folks I talked with in IRC jump on board. We'll see how it turns out.

The biggest improvement so far is that steamtricks will watch for app update/installs and search steamapps directories for offending libraries. Portal 2, for example, can now be downloaded and run without any manual muckery on Tumbleweed as it's libstdc is removed automatically upon completion of download (or verify).

Easiest way to test is download steamtricks and (should probably change default) set STEAM_OPENSSL_REPLACE=0. You can run with steamtricks --watch to make it persistent.

@boombatower Thank you I applied your fix on my side now the game dota 2 can finally be launched after 3 months.

However the framerate is only struggling in the range of 10- 20fps at the moment hence still unplayable. In my system log it shows a lot of "Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled" during the time game is running.

I dont think it's a hardware issue coz my windows system on this same machine runs all game fine without any heating problem at all. And before this 3 months long of unusable steam game I had 50-60 fps in dota 2 on this openSUSE TW.

@GreatBigWhiteWorld If you are running dri3 on r9 2xx series or newer there is a regression in OSS graphics stack, but that's obviously a different topic. It doesn't affect me so I'm not sure of the current state, I know they had a fix in mailing list. Alternatively switch back to dri2. Just a shot in the dark.

Alright, the corrected fix is present in 20161003 (http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss/suse/x86_64/steam-1.0.0.52-5.1.x86_64.rpm). Hopefully folks see the same positive result.

Steam has been fixed on 42.2 today, but i cant login. Steam client says the password or user are wrong, which arent since i logged in through browser. is this an issue on steam side or is it something else

So there are probably several different causes for the segfaults.

For me steam randomly doesn't start and segfaults instead and steam --reset and then steam makes me log in again and then it works again for a while.

Would be nice to have a steam client that has some basic reliability. I'm just waiting for a Valve employee trying to do a live demonstration and getting a segfaulting steam client instead...

@mm1ke Yup, rebuilding mesa with nettle fixed this for me too.

This is not fixed in opensuse 42.2 with openssl steam libs packages it will install the libs into /usr/lib/steam , although steam will launch and run correctly . Multiple games are broken when trying to load libcurl most noticeable all Feral games, the log says something about OPENSSL missing libcrypto version. I contacted Feral and they told me to add LD_PRELOAD with the /usr/lib/steam libs but that doesn't work. The strange thing is if I load the game directly from the binary it will log errors but ignore them and it will launch anyway. Adding DBUS_FATAL_WARNINGS=0 to launch options on steam or the launch script doesn't work. To clarify game will work but they cannot be launched through steam.

Issue still present on Ubuntu 16.10.

steam worked until a recent steam update (the steam-downloads-stuff and-updates-itself-update) and then came up with OPs message on opensuse 42.2. all workarounds I could find didn't work. but I can run it in a virtual machine on 42.2. btw: the error message is rubbish and not helpful in any way

If you are using that to excuse the foul language then you are wrong. Yes it is an issue with Steam itself as stated in an earlier post on this same thread. This tread is brainstorming ways of resolving the issue through community means.

The issue is developer responsibility.

Open terminal and add:

Now works, the crash issue is with the Feral's ported games.

Well i just updated my main gaming system to 42.2 and blamo, got hit with the libcrypto. Steam opens and runs but a number of games just wont open anymore. Seems my previous issue was slightly different. Switching to boomatower's repo for steam instead of lemmy04 or tyeann's.

I can confirm Yupy's issue with Feral games. Shadow of Mordor, Mad Max and Warhammer DoW II as well as rocket league.

Well that reared its ugly head agian... ran into the line 713 issue on some unusual hardware. This time instead of being a machine with an intelGPU it is happening on a machine with a Nvidia GTX 1050 TI machine.

I have sent an email to Feral support team and they said they leaved my ticket open and that their Developers team will look into it... Hope they will solve this issue.

DUNNO why this issue is only with openSUSE

I ended up chatting with boombatower and was able to eventualy get it working agian.

I had to do the command steam --reset

Then with more issues i ended up doing the command needed to get the Feral Ports running.
mv ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.1.0.0 ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.1.0.0_bak

then i was able to connect to steam and everything seemed to work like it did prior, with the exception being since i removed xboxdrv i now have better controller support in a select number of games.

With mesa 17.0.0 removed "--with-sha1". How build with libnettle now?
