Try to disable HTML motds in the "Advanced Settings" menu.
I've tried that and it doesn't fix my problem. However, the game seems less crash prone if i disable swap.. Dunno really why? At first i suspected it may be something wrong with my hardware. But i can run other games, like World Of Tanks (through Wine) for hours and hours and no hiccups or crashes what so ever. Another thing is that once i get the game running and actually play it, it usually runs fine for the rest of the time. I get good FPS with graphic settings on high.
Ok, so i've looked in to it a little further. Turns out it probably doesn't have anything to do with disabling swap on my machine. But i found something else: If i start a local game (server), then disconnects from it, and then connect to an internet game server, i get past the MOTD and can play. Very weird...
So i ran a gdb trace and got:
(gdb) continue
Continuing.

Not necessarily a Nvidia bug, but then again not everyone with a Nvidia card has this issue?
Can you do a "info shared" and "reg" and "disas" on this in gdb please? Thanks much.
And can you do a "free -m" in your terminal also?
Ok, here we go:

As far as i can understand, i've just run out of gpu memory? I googled about it and apparently this is something that must be avoided on linux, or else you'll get very bad performance... Don't think it should produce a segfault though, but it would explain the huge performance drop that occurs in some cases (workarounded with changing MSAA mode in-game, so the graphics get re-initialized).
Ok, so i experimented a little more and traced the GPU memory usage with nvidia-smi while running the game. Turns out that i actually run out of gpu mem even before i get to the MOTD. So, i set the graphic levels down to a point where it wouldn't hit the memory roof and voilá - the game launches perfectly with no segfault. But i'm gonna do some more attempts just to be sure. Maybe Nvidia bug after all?
I realized i misinterpeted the "reg" stuff you were talking about. I thought the command was simply "reg".. My bad :)

I havent figured out the "disas" part yet. Do i have to pass some argument to it? (address?)

I've experienced the same issues on an older laptop. Has a Quadro FX 570M with 255MB of video ram listed from "nvidia-smi" command. Same general behaviour and backtraces when running with ${GAME_DEBUGGER} set to "gdb" as you have as well.
The laptop can support 1920x1200 resolution, but I could only get barely-passable gameplay when running in the smallest windowed modes, which would permit me to join online games.
And yet, when I tried your suggestion about joining a local game first, and then online, I was able to join online games at the full 1920x1200 resolution. Of course, it was more or less unplayable (stayed in yellow and red fps zone whenever in confrontations with enemies) but it would run.
I can't explain why joining a local game first lets me join online games (though I'd love to hear an explanation), but it's a far outdated graphics card anyway. My desktop with a GTX280 can handle the game with all settings peaked, so I'd just consider this a case of insufficient hardware. Valve may list the minimum requirements as a video card with "256 MB" (according to wikipedia) but I don't consider windowed 1280x800 and all minimum settings "playable," either :-)
Did you try changing some graphical settings while in game? (like the MSAA option, usually works best). At least in my case (and many others) this will cure the bad fps.
I was watching the memory behaviour while i changed it and during the change (game freezes for a little while), it was freeing up gpu mem for a second and then reallocaded it.
My bet is that something goes wrong if texture memory is filled up before the game is finished loading, or something. It may either result in a segfault or very bad performance. Not sure but it seems the segfault and bad fps is somewhat related.
Ok here is some more backtrace. Before the game segfaults it freezes for a while (with sound clipping) and thats where i interrupted it. Don't know if this is exhaustive enough to provide some useful data. In that case please tell me how to. Like i mentioned before my debugging knowledge is not that high :)

It spends a while in that _ZN17CThreadSyncObject4WaitEj function before it segfaults. I guess it would have been of some interest to get disassembly of the libnvidia-core.so but i don't understand how to get it? I can get the instruction at $pc which is, and i'm guessing here, trying to write to memory address 0x0 :)

Unfortunately i can't figure out how to reproduce this bug, other than simply try connecting to a game server. Just as game gets connected and shows the MOTD screen it hangs for a while and then crashes back to desktop. This seems quite random because sometimes i just works and i can play. Doesnt matter if i connect to the same server.
I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit with Nvidia graphics driver 310.14 from the Ubuntu official repository (nvidia-experimental-310). Also tested with nvidia-current, nvidia-experimental-304 and the 310.19 version from xorg-edgers repository. Issue still remains the same.
|EDIT| Here's my hardware, as requested:
Here's my console output:
