Your system information

  • Steam client version: steam-launcher 1.0.0.52
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Debian testing
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] Yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No] Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I had been using steam on Debian testing for a long time without any issues. Recently I had a problem with my KDE and I have removed then reinstalled a bunch of KDE, X and desktop related packages.
After this, the Steam client does not start any more. If I start from KDE's menu, nothing visible happens. If I start from Konsole, it prints some messages, but at the end it just waits there forever.
I suspect either some packages are missing or the installed version is not compatible.
The steam-launcher package dependencies are met and the messages are not really helpful.
I have tried to remove my steam client, downloaded the current version from steampowered.com and installed it.

Can you please help me to find out what is missing and how to fix the current situation?

steam client output:

Hello @bagoy, this is possibly related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/48994 if you are now using libgcrypt 1.7.

This line is where things start to fall apart:

libGL: dlopen /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcrypt.so.20: symbol gpgrt_lock_lock, version GPG_ERROR_1.0 not defined in file libgpg-error.so.0 with link time reference)

Which hints that libgpg-error.so.0 in the steam runtime is too old to be used with your system libraries.

Hi,

I was having a pretty much identical problem with xubuntu 16.10. After the usual deletion of everything libstdc++ related, I ran; "~/.local/share/Steam$ find -name libtinfo* -delete" (might not be required, Steam didn't work yet after this one). Finally removing everything libgpg related under steam with "~/.local/share/Steam$ find -name libgpg* -delete" fixed the problem.

Hello @bagoy, @jape3, Steam's handling of the Steam runtime has changed to prefer host libraries before the Steam runtime variants, which should avoid this issue, and that was also extended to the bootstrap environment in the 1.0.0.55 steam package.

Are either of you still experiencing this issue on an up to date system?
