When I am in a chat with one person and open a new chat with another, it opens as a tab in the same chat window like usual. However, when I drag that tab out of that window to open it in a separate window, the tab preview just freezes just outside the window and stays there unless I click back inside the original chat window (my cursor is turned into a hand cursor when over a steam window at this point) instead of allowing a new window to be created.

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with the unity interface.

I'm having trouble reproducing this. Does it still occur for you? Did it ever work? Does anybody else have the same issue?

I tried it on Unity and I could drag out and create a new window without problems.

Tried to repro this. if I quickly move the mouse cursor around with a chat window grabbed, the preview stops moving completely until my cursor rests, it takes a brief while for the full window to appear. A simple window position change shouldn’t cause much lag, is the preview being redrawn each time its moved?

Maybe it would help @StephenCasella if you could provide your sysinfo ( as written here https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux ), do you have a slower card?

SStephenCasella 2013-01-11 github

I've updated the original post with my hardware information. I do not have a slower card (I experience 100+ fps in windows), but I did recently disable undirection of fullscreen windows in compiz-config-settings-manager to see if that would get my linux fps out of the 20 range and I haven't tried the chat since making that change or receiving the last steam update. I'll post back here as soon as I do.

This issue never occurred for me in windows but has always occurred so far on linux.

I just tested this issue again and am now able to create new windows from existing chat tabs. Toggling the setting I changed in ccsm didn't seem to have any impact, so I'm guessing it was inadvertently fixed in the most recent update. Thanks!

Thanks for the follow-up. I'm closing this out as fixed, but please re-open if it reoccurs in future.
