Dear developers,

I recently caught a discussion on the freedesktop.org wayland mailing list regarding the implementation of a gaming input protocol for Wayland : https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-devel/2017-January/032697.html
This struck me (as you can read it on the mailing list) as a remarkable opportunity to overhaul the whole controller API on Linux (even on X.org, given the recent libinput adoption). And compared to the proposed implementation, an API similar to the Steam controller one seems a much, much, better idea.

If valve could open (at least partially) the steam controller API to integrate it with the Wayland protocol, this would probably encourage developers to make use of the API, as well as providing steam an easy way to handle input, at a compositor level.
Depending how much could be opened, I also see that as an excellent way to encourage manufacturer cooperation.
Of course, fixes and new version would be less controllable, but steam and SteamOS could ship their own library.

I guess I do not need to elaborate that much more on the subject, you are probably already aware of the possible advantages and drawbacks, as well as the popular demand.

I wanted you to be aware of this opportunity, and, as such, am requesting some comments. Do you think this is feasible, would it even be useful?

Thanks,

Mayeul

P.S: in the title, "streamline" might not be the best word. feel free to substitute as appropriate.
