Your system information

  • Steam client version: Jun 28 2017
  • Distribution: Debian
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When I start a game, my Xbox One controller's input is not immediately recognized. If I use evtest to look at the virtual input device created by Steam, I can't see any events. After switching focus away from and back to the game the controller starts working normally. The virtual device is also suppressed if no game is running. The real device works all the time. My expectation is that I can just launch the game and play without performing voodoo rituals.

I have observed this in Monaco and Guacamelee.

My Logitech F710 controller and Logitech Wingman Cordless Rumblepad are not affected by this issue. Lsusb lists the controllers as:

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 046d:c211 Logitech, Inc. iTouch Cordless Reciever
Bus 001 Device 034: ID 046d:c21f Logitech, Inc. F710 Wireless Gamepad [XInput Mode]
Bus 001 Device 025: ID 045e:02dd Microsoft Corp.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Enable Xbox Configuration Support in Steam
  2. Start two evtest instances to observe events on the real and virtual devices
  3. Launch Monaco or Guacamelee
  4. Observe that only the real device is producing events
  5. Focus some other window, then the game again
  6. Observe that both devices are now producing events
