When in 2 or more concurrent chats, having unread text in an inactive tab causes the current text field to lose focus (even while typing) once the new text notification goes back down. Focus is typically granted to a separate window (such as that of an internet browser or whatever else happens to be up). I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with the Unity interface.

Updated. Sorry for the ambiguity and thanks for the time.

Not a problem, Stephen.

Odd question: what is your window manager's "mouse focus on..." setting set to?

SStephenCasella 2013-01-03 github

I'm not quite sure if this is the information you're after, but my window manager's focus mode is set to 'click':

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode
'click'

I don't see any other window manager properties related to that setting.

I ran into this issue several times two days ago (before my ISP dropped service, hence the latency in my response), and it seems that every time the slide up/down notification of the unread chat messages disappeared, the chat window lost focus. The text input itself seemed to lose focus as well on regular intervals after that if the unread tab was left blinking even if no new messages appeared (switching back and forth between tabs when new messages arrived prevented this), but I haven't experienced either enough to know if they are related or not.

The notification focus stealing problem is fixed in next release (happening this week).

Nothing extracted yet.
