Steam stuck on "Connecting Steam Account"

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When Steam is launched, it gets stuck on Connecting Steam account: accountname.... Have tried multiple reinstalls, reboots, and changing system variables with no changes to behaviour.

  1. Launch steam via terminal.

Hello @PaymonJay, /home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh: Permission denied is abnormal. Can you make sure steam is not trying to run, then delete the /home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime folder so that steam can regenerate it on the next run and see if that makes a difference?

That actually fixed my issue! After deleting /home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime I ran steam in the terminal and it actually launched. I then installed VVVVVV to test that I could in fact download and play games and it worked.
