What happens:
When entering pairing mode, if you get a code with A in it, steam will consider that as pressing "okay" in the background - rather than considering it a part of the pairing code.
What should happen:
Entering a code with the A button in it should work.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
Go through with beta firmware update
Follow guide to readd the steam controller
Get a pairing code with a A in it.
Get a message about the code being invalid, because you exited it too early.
