  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu):

    Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Describe what you expected should happen:
Steam should open the main window (Steam Storefront and My Library and so on) after logging in and installing any available updates
and what did happen:
It doesn't. It lets me accept the TOS, log in and downloads and extracts any available updates for the steam client, then does nothing. The terminal window from which i have launched the steam command freezes and Ctrl-C will not let me terminate the process.
Console Log: Github Gist
glxinfo: Github Gist
glxgears runs without errors
32-bit OpenGL libraries are installed (Intel Integrated Graphics; mesa and lib32-mesa).

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Run steam-command
  2. Accept TOS, log in, wait for it to update / validate the Steam client

Update:
This exact same issue also occurs on my main PC with an NVIDIA GTX980Ti graphics card and the proprietary nvidia, nvidia-utils and lib32-nvidia-utils installed

Facepalm The issue was that steam did not launch the GUI but only the Tray Icon, which was not shown in GNOME anymore due to them removing the systemtray. Closed Issue
