After being prompted by Steam to install the latest Nvidia driver, which happened successfully, and then rebooting, ubuntu 12.04 froze a minute or two after booting. To resolve the problem I had to run sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-* in the short time before the system froze. Everything's fine now!

To reproduce the issue all I need to do is reinstall the Nvidia 310 driver and reboot.

That happens with many drivers. Did it freeze every time you restarted after installing the updated driver, or just the first time?

It froze every time I restarted.

I'm running 310.14 as well, but it works fine. What is your video card? Your system info shows that you aren't even running nVidia drivers, but the nouveau driver.

I was only able to post after purging the Nvidia drivers, so currently yes, I'm running the nouveau driver. My card is a GeForce 9600M GS.

Alright. You want to report the issue to nVidia though, not Steam, as Steam
only recommended the drivers to you because it requires them to work. In
this case they don't seem to be - please contact nVidia support here:

Closing old non-Valve issue (can still be found in search).

Nothing extracted yet.
