https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux requests information we can use to help understand the issue you're having.
BTW, I did send all that information to a report to support, who redirected me here, so here it is again.. This is a default Ubuntu install:
ubuntu 12.10
Aspire-7250
Memory 3.6 GiB
Processor AMD E-450 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics x 2
Graphics Unknown
OS type 64-bit
Disk 433.8 GB
Same here. TF2 is very long to load. My Steam HDD can R/W at 42mbps but using TF2 it only use around 7mbps when loading.
@Antigonus : the reason we request the information in the manner we do is so we can see what graphics driver you've got loaded and whatnot.
I left it run overnight, still hadn't loaded in the morning - stuck at 3/4 on the "loading" bar - is it that an unnormal load time ? A friend who plays the game came by and said something was very wrong. He couldn't even navigate the menus to turn down the resolution etc, as it was so slow. We have never gotten past the menus. (Yep, of course you need good information .. I'm concerned that it says no graphics 'Unknown', is it using the Radeon chips? That might explain it. How can I see if Ubuntu is using them? How can they be turned on if not?)
I have same issue when I switch from iGPU to dGPU. Acer Aspire 7560G (Radeon HD 6620G+6650M) Kubuntu 12.10 x86_64, Catalyst 12.11 Beta 11.
On iGPU issue is not reproducible.
In the Steam client, go to Help, then select "System Information". Copy and paste the output from that either here or into a gist and link the gist here.
This will let us see your driver version, client version, and various other bits of information that can help troubleshoot.

Alright! it asked me to download a new client - and then it worked! .. first video game of this type I have ever played. ... It was a humbling experience but a lot of fun ..

Something aint right, it takes a good two minutes to see the man with the valve on his head - this is on a lightly loaded DSL connection which is fast for everything else. There is no response on the menus, it is nearly impossible to change any of the settings. The game itself never loads. The progress bar goes about 3/4ths across and just hangs there.
