When using Steam with Kubuntu, the KDE panel does not show steam icon at all. It would be useful that it would work with KDE as well as Gnome. Though unlike what Steam reports I'm actually using Kubuntu 12.04 with KDE 4.8.5.

Huh. I didn't think it was even trying to make a system tray icon yet. I never see one in Trayer.
I haven't used trayer* but I think that might be different to my issue. The dock I am referring to is the one you see in Gnome 3 when you move the mouse to the top-left hot-spot - the dock is a bunch of icons on the left when in that view. So in Gnome 2 land that would be the main bar at the bottom of the screen. Trayer seems like the status icons thing in the top right of Gnome screens. Having said that there is no icon in the top-right for Gnome 3 either. I didn't expect there to be one though.
I installed it an tried it under Gnome 3 and Gnome classic and it didn't seem to do anything - I didn't try very hard though :-P
I was talking about the KDE4 System Tray, which usually takes in icons when user started programs are running but no window is for them. For example Amarok or Boinc Manager. Steam behaves similarly as if I close the window it is still running and I can't get it back directly (eg I get it back by killing the MainThr process and then restarting).
@MrHippo - what version of gnome do you have? I do not see this problem running 3.2.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 x64.
I am using Gnome 3.6.0 but the Steam icon shows up in the dock now. Hooray!
Steam DOCKS here (Kubuntu 12.04) - but at the same time, it STAYS IN THE TASK BAR.
I like how all other apps do it - when closed, stay in the taskbar, with a menu option Quit - eg. Clementine or vlc do this. A patch for this would be greatly appreciated.

I can launch Steam from the Gnome overview screen (accessed by pressing the left Windows key) by typing its name and choosing it from the list.
Steam runs fine and I am able to switch to it using the Gnome overview screen or alt-tab.
Steam should also appear in the Gnome dock/panel but it does not do this by default. It is only displayed in the Gnome dock if the dock is updated for some reason. Examples of the dock being updated: when a new application is run, it is added to the dock, so the dock is updated to show the additional running application; if an icon in the dock is moved, the other icons in the dock need to shift to make space for it, this updates the dock to show the new icon positions.
Once Steam is in the dock is seems to stay there.
