Steam fails at startup

My system: Intel Core i7 2,3GHz, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, NVIDIA GTX 660M
Ubuntu 12.10 installed

Installing the client via Ubuntu Softwarecenter.

A window pops up "Start Steam to complete installation of the Steam Beta for the current user."

So I press "Start Steam Beta"

Nothing happens.

Now I got a Shortcut in my Unity titlebar. It doesn't have an icon, just the standard questionmark. Pressing results in: nothing happens.

Searching "dash" brings up another shortcut with the Steam icon. Pressing results in: nothing happens.

Typing "steam" into a terminal results in this:

Sorry, the post is looking a little messy now. Wish I had a codeblock function or something.
I guess the warnings aren't that important. The really tricky bit i'd say is the end with all the errors.

Hello everybody.
I have almost the same problems than BenjHawk.
I fully fallowed the procedure described in the forum here (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux) using the Ubuntu software center or the terminal commandes.

Config: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ @2000MHz with 2Go RAM; GPU=Nvidia GeForce 7600GT AGP8X version, motherbord is an ASRock K7S41GX
OS: x86 Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Gnome 3.4.2) fully updated, installed on is own second 160 Go hard disk (ext4 partition of 60Go) and swap (3.5Go). WinXP is installed on the first hard disk.
NVidia drivers: the beta newest version (v304.48) (NB: the GPU is not very accurately recognized by the Nvidia X Server because of returning a 7650 GS AGP version, but everything else is working correctly).

The Steam app seems to be correctly installed and a shortcut is present into the Unity bar. However nothing happened when clicking on.

If I am trying to start Steam using the Terminal (sudo steam), i obtained this message:

I notify that Steam installed using PlayOnLinux (WINE) seems to works properly, as well as the WinXP Steam app.

dieudivin: You shouldn't launch Steam with root privileges. Try launching simply with "steam" rather than "sudo steam".

At the begining, I trusted that the matter could possibly be a problem of privileges or something related with...
However, launching steam with standard privilege lead on almost the same result:

Hi and thx for your replies,

same as dieudivin I didn't give steam root privileges. At first. After it failed I tryed it with the sudo command in front, but this also failed.

Problem solved.

I installed the latest nvidia drivers.

At first I encountered some problems there, seems like a package needed has to be installed manualy. The packagename is: linux-headers-generic

The package can be found in the standard repository.

After installing that the latest drivers will run without problems and so will steam.

Hi BenjHawk.
I am happy that you solve your problem.
Unfortunately it is not my case. This package was already installed on my Ubuntu as well as the latest beta driver usable for Steam. The Steam icone or a terminal is unable to launch Steam.
I still encounter the same line error even after I tried to re-install the linux-headers-generic package.

Note that if i performed a right click on the Steam icone, a menu is displayed but nothing happens if I click on.

What display drivers are you using? I installed the experimental nvidia v310.14 drivers, then it worked for me.
