[steam client] bug when launching a "game shortcut" instead of chosing it in steam client list

Hi,

I have noticed a problem when launching a game directly from OS menu (shortcut) instead of launching steam client then chose the game in the list.
When you close the game a process seems stay in memory and you can't launch steam client anymore until you kill the process .. when launching the game from menu it's like if,at the end, the steam client was not properly closed.

How to reproduce the error (in kubuntu 12.10 4 bit)

  1. launch a game with the game shortcut created by steam client at install

Menu selection

  1. give your user/password in steam client popup
  2. close the game
  3. a process "MainThrd" is still alive in the process menu

MainThrd

  1. launch steam client
    it won't launch ... untill you kill the process or reboot .. You have to stop the "MainThrd" process

Conclusion:

It seems to me that this thread is not closed properly when launching the game from shortcuts
When using the client to chose the game this problem don't seems to occur (I close it by using the client menu : Steam - exit)

This is normal, as Steam is supposed to keep running after launch. For example, if you launch Steam and close the main window Steam will keep running. There's a Steam tray icon that lets you control Steam but it has a number of issues on Linux currently.

Sorry, my mistake ...

On my desktop (In kubuntu) there is no tray icon telling that Steam is
still running in background) that explains why I thought it was a bug ...

I have the same problem and I think the behavior is broken in the current state.

After starting a game via a .desktop-file and closing it, there's now way to tell if steam is running in the background or not when you look at the UI of Ubuntu 12.04 for example. In my default installation there is no tray icon.

Can't say if steam is running or not.

For example, if you launch Steam and close the main window Steam will keep running.

At least in Unity when I click the "X" button in the steam client, the game gets just "minimized" and does not have the same behavior like in the above example.

In my default installation there is no tray icon.

I just installed steam on another computer of mine and there I have a steam tray icon. So it seems that the updates on my older installation on my main pc didn't install the tray icon via software update.

I think with a tray icon the issue is fine. I will see if I get the tray icon on my main pc when I re-install steam.
