I use x11 fvwm window manager. Usually we have several virtual desktops. Steam will crash if it is not started in the first virtual desktop, aka desktop 0. May have to same pb with other window managers providing virual desktops.
Cannot reproduce. Very probably fixed and latest beta client update.
