After a recent update earlier today, my steam stopped working because of some dependency issues. I installed those dependencies, but now this problem seems to have come up. Whenever I run steam through the console, it fills with:
appdatacache.cpp (2124) : Assertion Failed: !bSharedKVSymbols

full log here

It then starts up the initial "Connecting Steam Account:" window, and hangs there.

I have been looking up solutions, but nothing has worked so far.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Launch Steam by typing 'steam' into the console

An Update to this, it seems to be able to do some things. It seems to have run an update since I left it open, although it doesn't seem to work yet, it still gets stuck at the same spot with the same error message. Something I didn't mention in the original was that it takes a very long time to start up and get to the point where it fails, it doesn't even get to the point where it starts erroring in the same time it took to launch before.

In the first part of the log, there is a lot of GTK warnings talking about missing theme engines. I have installed the i386 versions of several of these theme engines, and I was able to stop those warnings from appearing, because it's something. This was not successful in solving the problem, as I still have the same problem of steam not starting, but those warnings are no longer an issue.

New update, it now crashes instead of hanging. It does take a while to do so, but it does crash now, without any of the Assertion failed:!b... that was there before.

New Gist

Edit: It now does the Assertion Failed: !bSharedKVSymbols error on next launch. I don't know why, sorry.

So, A conclusion to this story, I don't know. As a last resort, I deleted the ~/.steam folder, I uninstalled and reinstalled steam, and it works now. I'll have to reinstall my games again, but it works now. If anyone else finds this, searching for answers, IDK, it doesn't make sense to me either.
Sorry for using your time
