After installing Proton 4.2-1, the Steam client needed to be restarted in order to make it visible in the Steam Play settings (version pulldown, "Enable for all titles" checked). Once the value in the pulldown was changed, a second restart was requested by the client itself.
IMO, the pulldown should always show all available versions of Proton, even freshly installed ones. I don't know enough about the client-requested restart to be able to comment about it, but I would like to think that it shouldn't be mandatory either.
