Systray Game Menu doesn't trigger pre-launch options (STEAM menus)

Example game: ASTRONEER

When I hit "Play" in my library, I get a STEAM-styled pop-up asking if I want to launch the game fullscreen, or windowed.

When I click on the systray icon (in this case Gnome + Ubuntu), and go to "ASTRONEER" in the pull-down menu, it doesn't ask me, and just picks what I assume to be the first option.

This is kinda annoying and I'd rather it ask me the options, instead of having to go to my library to get that, since the first option isn't exactly my general preference.

Hello @BloodyIron, I expect that no prompts is the intended behavior and the same as steam steam://run/<AppID>. Marking as a Feature Request for it to be changed.

Update February 2026: Still not fixed and now causing hardware-level stability issues

I am reporting that this bug is still present in the latest Steam Client. While it was a "minor annoyance" in 2019, it has now become a critical stability issue for modern Linux gaming (specifically NVIDIA + Wayland + Proton).

The Problem: The Systray Context Menu ignores ALL user-defined launch option and bypasses the "Select Launch Option" dialog.

Why this is critical now (The Hardware Failure): In games like 7 Days to Die, I use the "Launch game without EAC" launch option to bypass Easy Anti-Cheat, which is necessary for stability on Linux.

  1. Launch via Main Library: Respects the launch option. Game runs perfectly.
  2. Launch via Systray: Ignores the launch option. Game forces EAC to load.
  3. The Result: EAC under Proton (on this specific setup) causes massive CPU/GPU synchronization stutters. These stutters trigger a hardware safety mechanism on my NVIDIA RTX 2080, locking the card into the P3 Power State (Idle). The system remains unstable until a driver restart or reboot.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Set any launch option (e.g. "Ask when starting game" or "Show game launcher") in Game Properties.
  2. Launch via Main Library "PLAY" button: launch option is used.
  3. Launch via Systray Right-Click Menu: launch option is ignored.

System Information:

  • OS: Arch Linux (Kernel 6.18.7-cachyos-bore)
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2080 (Driver 590.48.01)
  • DE/WM: Hyprland (Wayland)
  • Steam Version: 1769025840

Note: I am using an AI to help me summarize these technical findings to ensure the context is clear, but these are my own verified test results.
