For people coming here:
The latest client update has an issue if your package manager has not updated to the latest steam loader already - http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/archive/precise/steam_latest.deb
Installing that should fix it.

Fixing this link doesn’t help as steam.sh rebuilds it.

This seems to be already fixed with the last update.

My steam claims it is up to date. Which build does your report?

I have the same version of Steam, but the bootstrapper (which creates this symlinks, i think) is 1.0.0.20.

Jjohndrinkwater 2013-01-09 github

Hmm. ~/Steam/steam.sh doesn’t contain a version number for me
Looks like I have to reinstall the client.

GGigadoc2 2013-01-09 github

No, that's the version of the "steam"-package by my distribution (Arch). Should be the same as the ubuntu package numbers though.

Huh, after checking, steam hadn’t added the valve repo to my system, so even though client continued to update itself, must have been using the older client scripts.

For people coming here, make sure you have the latest steam.deb update, it will resolve the problem.

Seems other people are hitting this, so reopening.

Hmmm, this is interesting - The root link seems to be broken and fixed in a cycle for me:

Prior to running Steam:

ian@delenn~ [i]> ls -l ~/.steam
total 8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   22 Jan 10 16:57 bin -> /home/ian/.steam/bin32/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:55 bin32 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:55 bin64 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian 3472 Jan 10 16:57 registry.vdf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   28 Jan 10 16:56 root -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:57 starting
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   28 Jan 10 16:55 steam -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    6 Jan 10 16:56 steam.pid
prw------- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:57 steam.pipe|

After starting Steam the root link is broken (only once the main window has come up - while "connecting" the links are as above):

ian@delenn~ [i]> ls -l ~/.steam
total 8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   33 Jan 10 16:58 bin -> /home/ian/.steam/root/ubuntu12_32
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:58 bin32 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:58 bin64 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian 3476 Jan 10 16:58 registry.vdf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   21 Jan 10 16:58 root -> /home/ian/.steam/root
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:58 starting
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   28 Jan 10 16:58 steam -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    6 Jan 10 16:58 steam.pid
prw------- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:58 steam.pipe|

After exiting Steam it says extracting package then restarts itself (see bug https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/605) and the links are fixed:

ian@delenn~ [i]> ls -l ~/.steam
total 8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   22 Jan 10 16:59 bin -> /home/ian/.steam/bin32/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:58 bin32 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   40 Jan 10 16:58 bin64 -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian 3476 Jan 10 16:59 registry.vdf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   28 Jan 10 16:59 root -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:59 starting
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ian ian   28 Jan 10 16:58 steam -> /home/ian/.local/share/Steam/
-rw-r--r-- 1 ian ian    6 Jan 10 16:59 steam.pid
prw------- 1 ian ian    0 Jan 10 16:59 steam.pipe|

After exiting Steam the second time the links remain fixed until Steam is manually launched again.

@DarkStarSword yes, that was the issue I was having until the latest deb update replaced the /usr/bin/steam.sh script

@bleached is your problem related to this bug, or #605 ?
