I write here too, hoping it's the right place.
I have a problem, certainly trivial, with the steam client on Kubuntu 18.04.
With the exception of the game Serious Sam Fusion 2017, I can't start any other game, even those that should work without problems, like Doom 2016. I read the message "preparing to start the game", after which nothing happens.
I tried to use different versions of proton, force the start of Vulkan (for Doom) and move the games folder from the external disk to the main disk of the operating system, but I didn't succeed.
Being all automated, I don't know what to do with Proton; I am afraid that some essential library is missing, or something else, that with wine I would have tried to add in the past.
I use an Nvidia 2080ti with driver 430, installed via ppa. I also tried other driver versions, as well as a more updated version of Ubuntu (19.04) but unfortunately nothing has changed. I use Gnu / Linux to work and Windows to play when I have time. Knowing from the existence of the Steam client also for Linux, I wanted to try to install it, hoping to be able to start some video games.
Can someone help me? I unfortunately don't know what else to do.

Hello @raffaele1990, does /tmp/dumps/<username>_stdout.txt or ~/.steam/error.log have any hints? Also, please copy your system information from Steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

Interesting. At least with doom 2016 I can't find any reason why you shouldn't be able to run it. https://www.protondb.com/app/379720

There are people who say it should run out of the box. Also people with 2080 (however no ti version), people with driver 430, people on Kubuntu, etc.

I would have to think something is different with your computer or you're doing something different.

Unfortunately, my knowledge in the world of computer science and Linux is really very basic, so I'm afraid I can't do more. I tried all the solutions I could find on the net, and everything that my logic suggested. If you give me precise instructions on what I can do to identify the cause of the problem I can try.
In fact I expected not to have too many problems, but with Proton I feel like I'm still on Wine, when something started 10 years ago, but not much else, and you couldn't understand why!

Go to game settings in steam:

  1. Right click on game
  2. Properties (last item in shown context menu)
  3. Press Set Launch Options (first tab, topmost, first button)
  4. Write this in textbox: PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
  5. Save
  6. Start game
  7. Exit steam

In your home directory(/home/<username_here> or just ~ directory) you should find steam-<appid>.log file, for DOOM 2016 it should be steam-379720.log

Hello @raffaele1990, are you still experiencing this issue on an up to date system? Proton has known long standing issues with NTFS and in general, it's recommended to use a Linux native filesystem with any Steam library folders that you want to use with Proton.
