Actually, it looks like it would ignore your choice. It's more a GUI bug, I guess. In my case I selected BETA and it still showed non participation. After rebooting Steam it was changed to BETA.
So, can you clarify a bit for me?
When you first bring up the Settings dialog, on the ACCOUNT pane, you should see the section "Beta participation:". Not sure what yours says, but probably something like "Not participating (1 currently available)". Is this the field that doesn't show your selection from bringing up the CHANGE... dialog and selecting "Steam Beta Update" and then OK? Is this what you mean by unselecting it?
@bdeen-valve For me it was exactly that dropdown menu where you can select "Steam Beta Update". I tried several times to activate "Steam Beta Update". Always the drowdown menu switched back to "NONE.." as I had selected 'NONE...".
I thought: "Ok, probably the selection is already recognized by the code behind it and simply the dropdown menu doesn't get back the new value. So, I just restart ..."
After restarting Steam everything was ok. "Steam Beta Update" is written in Settings/Account, too.
Now, I can use the dropdown menu like it should. I select "Steam Beta Update" and it shows "Steam Beta Update".
If someone is still seeing this, please let us know. We don't get this to reproduce here at all. It's good that it's no longer happening for you either.
Maybe it was just related to the Steam problems some users experienced after the last release. So that it was just a side effect on the network side. Therefore, I would say closing this issue it ok.
I just barley got this. Weird, I am going to try to reinstall this and see.
I saw the prompt but I was installing Portal2 beta about 11% or so and realized that I should opt in the beta for the game to work(it wont start with out that). I instead of restarting hit cancel and waited till the DL finished and then tried again and then realized that it wouldn't take the option from the gui into affect.
also something weird Linux asked me to update steam I declined and will try that next.
Let me poke around and see what makes this tick. Also, a nice option woud be a work around or an XML or something I could change to make this happen.
PS VALVe Thanks for making this possible!! I am so happy to be able to game on my favourite OS.
Also I thought to work around this using the big screen method and the big screen crashes.
Ok I have this fixed. I just reinstalled the game. There is probably a cache or config file that one can nuke and have this all just reset and play dumb. Also I think a possible work around is to check the game and select --> properties --> betas and try there.
in the end I don't recommend my solution but only as a last resort . For some reason apt wouldn't unstall the game. so I had to remove it
rm -rf /home/$USER/.local/share/Steam
and if you try to re run it, it will ask to reinstall.
anyway hope it helps.
Now I need to find a solution for screen selection . For some reason steam likes to run on my second monitor.
Cheers!

If you go to Steam->Settings->Beta participation you cannot select the beta, when you click ok it ignores you and unselects it.
