Feature Request

I have installed some older games like
"the ultimate doom"
and it states

Runs on this computer via Steam Play
Proton 3.7-8 selected by Valve testing

Currently I have 4.2 installed but it installs Proton 3.7-8 automatically if I don't override the preference.

Probably most people don't want to have multiple proton versions installed if it isn't necessary and also to check every game before launching it is tedious.

Wouldn't it be better to check if the installed Proton version is higher and just let the user know what that the suggested Proton version is.
So the game would be started with the current version and if there is a regression or so the user could choose to install the suggested version if it is necessary.

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found another request for this feature.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available that
    contain this feature already.

Hello @romanstingler, this is a feature request for the Steam client, rather than Proton itself, so I've transferred this issue to the steam-for-linux issue tracker.
