I originally installed the 304 drivers. I was prompted to update to the 310 drivers and then needed to reboot. Upon reboot drivers did not load properly, and I was brought to a shell. Entered

jockey-text --list

echoed:

nvidia_experimental_310 - nvidia_experimental_310 (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use)
xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use)
xorg:nvidia_current_updates - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use)
xorg:nvidia_experimental_304 - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (experimental beta) (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use)

notice both 310 and 304 drivers enabled. Temporary solution by uninstalling 304 drivers

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304

sudo reboot

Installation of experimental 310 drivers should remove 304 drivers

This bug is not a Steam bug, but rather a bug with your OS. It does give a nice heads up to some people, though.

However, I'm unable to reproduce this on Mint 14, 32-bit.

Your best bet is to follow up with nVidia. I've done exactly what it sounds like you tried and not had this issue.

Nothing extracted yet.
