Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): basically every version since I game with proton / wine
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: yes, all the time
  • Have you checked for system updates?: yes, daily

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

I am having in a lot of games for quite some time now, issues with the mouse when using Steam Remote Play (was the same before on Steam In-Home Streaming). For instance if I stream The Elder Scrolls Online I can log into the game, until I see the character. Then I can move around with the mouse and keyboard normally. The moment tho, I press a mouse button, the desktop mouse is shown within the game and the mouse control goes vertigo. The mouse movement is sped up and I cant use the mouse no more to navigate. When I hit the ingame menu then, the mouse cursor disappears but its still there, I just have to guess where it is. The speed is normalized again.

Now to help me, I do the following: I open the in game menu and then press alt + esc or f1 or f2. After that the system menu or quick launch bar pops up and I see my desktop mouse. Then I click with my desktop mouse back on the game. Since I pressed alt while in game, the in game menu hid and the mouse now is normalized. I can press click, turn, do whatever I want. If I want on the other hand navigate the ingame menu, I have to click alt + esc or f1 or f2 and then click back on the game. Then I have the mouse in the menu. If I was to change tho from the in game menu back to the game, the mouse is borked again. So I have to do this steps every time, depending on whether I need the in game menu or want to play. Upon clicking stuff in the in game menu, the curosr becomes invisible again, so I have to repeat the steps or just guess.

The same issue occurs with Star Citizen being launched from Lutris via Remote Play. It even happens when I launch it without going over Steam. In Star Citizen the mouse just vanishes in the ingame HUD menu. It doesnt go vertigo and is released in game. To make it appear again in the game HUD menu, I have to press escape twice and there it is. One click with it tho and its gone again.

I have numerous games with that issue, for quite some time now. Guess I got used to it, so I never reported about it, but I want to now. I am using the Steam Link in a 5 Ghz Wlan on a television for headless gaming. I stream from a Ryzen 9 3900X on a Vega 64. The behaviour is the same with mesa, amdvlk or mesa-aco.

I tried running games in a virtual desktop with capture the mouse on in winecfg but that didnt help.
I'ld say about 50% of the games I play are affected by similiar mouse issues. In most games it is necessary to play them in windowed mode to make the mouse work at all. Otherwise upon pressing a mouse button in a first person game, the desktop cursor is shown and goes crazy, having a movement speed of 10000%, like it was in a very tiny resolution, which borders are projected onto the main resolution. Without Remote Play on a direct cable connection, everything is working fine.

What am I doing wrong?
Greetings and thanks for your help,
~ent

I have the same problem with "Remnant from ashes" using Proton 6.3-5.

Any news?

Still broken in some games, rendering them unplayable.

Not sure if I should just add to this or not, but I'm having an issue with direct mouse input, where it will often be offset or not move at all. I'm playing point and click type games on a tablet via steam link and the only way to make it work is to use trackpad mode, which works flawlessly (but is more tiresome).
