driver version error closes steam

I get the error about my nVidia proprietary driver being out of date. I understand the need for this. But it seems like it shouldn't close steam down. It should block me from running any games, but it seems like i should still be able to browse steam and see what's there.

Video Driver Problem: Your system is running older proprietary nVidia video
drivers. Steam requires driver version 304.22 or higher. I click OK, steam
closes. I click help and it fires up firefox and goes to the website
(although the modal dialog stays up front).

I'm on Ubuntu 12.10, 64-bit, Intel Core 2 duo E8500, 8GB ram, nVidia
drivers are 295.40 (default proprietary drivers when I installed at least).

It might be crashing, and that looks like it is exiting. Would you mind running /usr/bin/steam from the command line, and then see if you see "crash" in the output and it so, paste it here? If there is a crash, there will be a crash id that we can use to see what happened. Also, I suggest updating your driver, steam will likely work then. Thanks.

I do intend to upgrade, but rebooting takes some effort due to various
things i have running, it's a weekend sort of task.

This isn't a crash. With Nvidia's drivers, steam actually requires 304+, because earlier versions of the driver have a bug that makes Steam can't work with. Therefore, Steam exits if you don't have 304+. Closing bug.
