By accident I have made /tmp not writeable by user. Then Steam displayed a message which took me a while to debug.
steam-on-64. Could you please add some kind of '/tmp is working' check?

Mind if I ask why you don't have /tmp as working? Steam isn't the only program which hinges its performance on /tmp.

@MrSchism As I said it was a pure accident. I was experimenting with steam, chroots, etc. It is not a really hardly-missed feature, but changing that message to something saner (or expanding it somehow) can help people.

This leads me to believe that they left the fifos in /tmp (as per #215).

Seems a pretty rare scenario and not worth the investment here.
