I'm not even sure what to label this as.
SSE2 instructions are specifically used only for the Linux version ?
Because Steam on windows XP on the same PC is working properly !

Can't help thinking maybe one of the deps requires SSE2 more than the actual steam client.
OK, I read all links that I found concerning SSE2 instruction and I concluded that you are perfectly right. My AMD Athlon XP 2800+ did not support SSE2 instruction as all other related topic posted on github.
So I strongly recommand to the Valve's team to update the minimum configuration on the Steam website and fully display the requirement of SSE2 instruction support by the processor, at least for the beta Steam client.
By this way I guess you should significantly decrease the number of new issue related to older processor.
I dream some day a compilated version of the Steam client for Linux that does not use SSE2 instruction, and recycle this computer for gaming :-)
I intend now to close this issue.

Hello everybody,
As expected by johndrinkwater, I created a new issue concerning Steam (see the roiginal topic here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/567)
First the config of my test's computer:
The motherbord is a ASRock K7S41GX.
CPU & RAM: AMD Athlon XP2800+ @2.02GHz (FSB@333MHz) and 2x1Go RAM DDR 166MHz. No Overclocking.
2 HDD using IDE interface: The second receiving Ubuntu with a SWAP partition of 3.5Go (the 1st HDD contains WinXP)
A CD burner and a DVD burner
The GPU is a GeForce 7600GT AGP8X version (not the PCI-E version) and the driver is the latest as possible for this card: v304.48. The NVidia X server recognized the card as a GeForce 7650GS AGP8X but all seems to work properly.
To resume the story:
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (French version) with GNOME 3.4.2 with all updates and install Steam fallowing the recommandation of the tutorial here (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux).
Steam is installed, I have even an icon on the launcher bar where I am able to right-click and see the menu. However anyway what I can do, nothing is happening.
I tried to launch steam using a terminal with or without the sudo command but nothing happened as well.
When lauching Steam with the Terminal, I obtain this message:

Note that the figures after line 287 is changing "everyday" I am trying to fix the problem.
If I launch Steam using WINE, all is working properly.
To conclude: I am not a Linux expert. I have originally much more skills on Windows but I am going slowly (but surely) on Linux. Native Steam on Linux finishing to persuade myself to try Linux again but harder ;-p

Update:
The new update for Steam was available few minutes ago. I installed it of course and tried to launch the software.
This time I had a black screen during 1 second, but nothing else.
Launching Steam with the Terminal give me an error on line 337
