I have exactly the same issue. OS recognizes Logitech Extreme 3D pro but steam detects it as generic gamepad.

Still true as of Steam client build Mar 14 2022, at 19:49:17.

There are some dud versions of libSDL2 out there that mistakenly flag the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro as a gamepad. It looks like Steam is using one of those versions. Steam upgrading to libSDL2 >= 2.0.20 should resolve the problem.

Is it just this joystick or are all joysticks facing this issue on Steam for Linux?

Note, it is not only an Arch issue. I have this issue on Ubuntu 21.10 as well.

I solved this problem using X360CE. And the result is even better than before.

I am also having this issue. This joystick worked fine in Arma 3 for me a few months ago, but now Steam and Arma are unable to detect it. It's listed under lsusb and I can remap keys through 3rd party software, so I know it's not a hardware issue.

Same issue here. Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (X3D) joystick is not working under Debian with Steam Version: 1690583737 (latest as of 2023-09-08). This is a fairly new Debian install with nothing too unusual/unorthodox on my system. An Xbox Series X|S wired USB-C controller has worked out of the box fine for a few weeks, but the Logitech joystick seems to not be detected by Steam at all. I've made sure to test both controllers in isolation (unplugged) and that doesn't seem to matter. Proton Experimental is enabled for Compatibility in Steam.

steam-devices is installed. I see the joystick at /dev/input/js0 and jstest /dev/input/js0 seems to work fine.

Driver version is 2.1.0.
Joystick (Logitech Logitech Extreme 3D) has 6 axes (X, Y, Rz, Throttle, Hat0X, Hat0Y)
and 12 buttons (Trigger, ThumbBtn, ThumbBtn2, TopBtn, TopBtn2, PinkieBtn, BaseBtn, BaseBtn2, BaseBtn3, BaseBtn4, BaseBtn5, BaseBtn6).
Testing ... (interrupt to exit)
Axes:  0:     0  1:     0  2:     0  3:     0  4:     0  5:     0 Buttons:  0:off  1:off

I added my user to the input group and logged out/in (rebooted even). evtest shows the joystick currently at /dev/input/event3, and evtest --grab /dev/input/event3 seems to work.

lsmod | grep joydev shows that's already loaded. I've killed and restarted Steam between all the troubleshooting steps.

Also tried a random udev rule someone suggested [2]. I tweaked it a bit and verified I see the permission changes, but it makes no difference.

If I install xserver-xorg-input-joystick and reboot I see the joystick working as an (awkward) input device. It's definitely not a hardware problem.

Something interesting is that if I manually edit config.vdf and append/format this line https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/commit/76bd6cd2d9ebd0d139e04036978742c8fc02c0b6 to the SDL_GamepadBind section, Steam does detect the joystick, but incorrectly, as a Gamepad. On that note, this comment https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/issues/7698#issuecomment-1544956485 is interesting:

Steam intentionally does not detect the Logitech Extreme 3D joystick. It only detects gamepad style devices.

I know I've used my Logitech joystick to play Star Wars squadrons in the past and it worked flawlessly on Windows, but now I'm wondering if I was playing it directly through EA's game portal or Steam...

I see that a commit from almost a year ago https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/commit/f398d8a42422c049d77c744658f1cd2bb011ed4a includes support for this joystick, but perhaps the version of libSDL shipped with Steam does not include that commit like jamesremuscat mentions above.

Not sure where the source code for SDL3 lives, but I guess that's what Steam's using and I suppose it's missing support for this joystick in its current iteration

For my use case I'm able to play Star Wars: Squadrons via Bottle and the EA app. The joystick works fine and just needed some minor tweaking for my preferences. Doesn't solve the problem of Steam-only titles like Ace Combat 7, which I was hoping to play.

Great write-up @williamhaley . It's now 2 years later. I could replicate all of what you did. In the meantime though, v3 of SDL has been released. Based on the tags, the first preview of version 3 was preview-3.1.3, released on 2024-10-04. The first stable release was release-3.2.0, on 2025-01-21.

When I checked the KDE game controller utility I found that it does detect the x3d pro but doesn’t consider it a game controller for some reason. I think this might be related to the problem.
