When purchasing games through the browser, you're presented with an option to remotely install the games you just purchased. Regardless of whether this is a browser on another machine, when I'm away from home, or the browser running on the same machine as Steam, this has never worked for me.
In case it matters, I always have my Steam client running in Big Picture mode.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
Purchase a game through the browser and complete the purchase process
You're presented with the option to remotely install it on the running Steam session on your computer
Click this button
Wait a couple of hours; I have no idea how fast the Steam client should pick this up
