Steam client reset itself due to running low on free disk space. It should detect this BEFORE trying to update.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

1. Create low disk space condition
2. Start steam
3. Observe it rather then fail, attempt to recreate your profile

Worth noting, the volume was not completely out of space. Also worth noting is this will completely fuck the steam install after. Just segfaults. Yay.
