I'm copying my ubuntu desktop SteamApp to my ubuntu laptop SteamApp folder.
I do the copy to an external drive and then copy it to the laptop.
In that instance, I agree that verifying should also verify the permissions.
I agree that it should change file permissions back to default when the files were initially downloaded.
Would have saved me a minor headache. ;)

in the case you are, that would be the reason for loosing your permission (if on linux).

But I think it has nothing to do with Verifying Game Cache restores file the permissions.

@lopho the point really goes beyond why the permissions are going away to the feature request that, should they go away for whatever reason, they can be restored by verifying the cache.

Technically this also applies on Windows - I had to takeown.exe /f steamapps /r and then recursively grant myself full control after copying everything to my new gaming rig.
What is the current status of this feature request?
I have recently restored my SteamApps folder from a NTFS drive and it would be really important if the Steam client could at least fix the execute permission for game files.

so what is the actually fix i have the same problem but verifying the game dosent work and i have read this at least 20 times and i physically do not see and answer
This is still a bit of an annoying issue after accidentally resetting permissions on a bunch of stuff.
I ran into this when I migrated from Windows to Linux and copied all of the Steam Library folders from a backup (in order to avoid having to redownload everything) - some games got fixed permissions, but most of them didn't (and Portal 2 wouldn't run until after chmod +x was applied to a handful of files).
Nothing extracted yet.
I have a little slow connection and I don't want to download all the games twice for my Desktop and Laptop, so when I restore SteamApps folder, the file permissions are lost.
I think that Verifying Game Cache tool setting the right permission can be useful for restoring SteamApp backup folder.
