Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Games that had custom proton version forced cannot be re-installed without any apparent reason after that custom proton is removed. The UI doesn't explain why the game cannot be installed and the properties dialog has misleading contents.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Install a custom Proton into .steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/
  2. Force that Proton version in properties of a game
  3. If the game was installed - uninstall it (this can be all done on a game that is not installed)
  4. close Steam, remove that custom Proton, start Steam
  5. Install button is now grayed out without any explanation, "Force the use of specific Steam Play compatibility tool" in the properties is not even checked.

After checking "force the use..." game is installable again.

I have the same issue but in my case steam crashes and the only solution is to either reinstall the proton version that was removed or delete my steam config.

  1. download a proton version not provided by steam (Glorious eggroll in this example: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases)
  2. extract it in the appropriate folder (steam/compatibilitytools.d/)
  3. start/restart steam so that the proton version is detected
  4. force this proton version as a game's specific steam play compatibility tool
  5. (may not be necessary) start the game and then stop it
  6. delete the proton version from steam/compatibilitytools.d/
  7. click on the game in your steam library -> steam crashes whether the game is installed or not.

I've also reported this issue via steam support but I was sent here.
