I have a multi-user computer and if I try to launch Steam while it is open on another user's desktop I get the following error: Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xffa47830) failed with error 1: A Steam Engine Instance already exists. If there is a steam update available the update still works fine. Is there a way to run Steam without getting the other user to log in and log out of Steam?

Sorry this is not supported

@johnv-valve For future reference, will it ever be? With the increase in home users using virtualization solutions and people using remote access (NX being a powerful new one showing favor on linux).

Who knows what the future will hold? Right now the gaming experience with remote access is pretty bad and I don't see this being a really compelling scenario. Virtualization should be unaffected. (e.g. if you have two VMs, you can run Steam in each VM) But still not a great experience right now.

It definitely may be worth looking into; Given a large enough local cache, NX can fully cache a small game (Offspring fling) on the remote system with relative ease in countries with affordable high-speed internet (Hong Kong, South Korea, France, etc.). As is, my home computer (on Wireless G) connects at 20 Mbps down and 5 up. I've been able to actually play solitaire and Kiriki (KDE Yahtzee) on a 1.44 Mbps up/down connection without lag by the second game.

Thing is that it uses SSH for session control and encryption allowing for multiple people to connect simultaneously.

Nothing extracted yet.
