Hello @mAd-DaWg, downloading and managing game updates is handled by the Steam client, instead of Proton itself, so I've transferred this issue to the steam-for-linux issue tracker.
In the Steam Library view, can you go the game, then click the ⓘ symbol on the right side and verify that the info that is exposed includes something like "Runs on this computer via Steam Play. Proton # selected by you for this title."?

Thanks for your response! It didn't, but going to the game properties and checking the "Force use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" immediately got the game to download, so this issue is now resolved for me.

Glad to hear you got it working. We've seen this in the past when Steam Linux Runtime (a Linux container for Linux games) was selected for Windows games. That combination is no longer available with games that don't look like they have a native Linux release, but it hints the same scenario happened to you, where the platform override was active, and a Proton version was not selected.

After logging a support ticket (HT-GR9R-2BT5-HQCK) and being adamantly pointed here, am am now logging the issue here.
Aegis Defenders was working correctly until steam re-install. Now when installing, game says installed successfully, but the game folder remains empty and game is obviously unplayable(see attached screenshot). The app manifest also reports size on disk as zero. Other proton dependent games such as "The Talos Principle" and "Amoung Us" are installing and running perfectly fine.
