Steam client version (build number or date): 3.8.2021

Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] No
Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No] No, I'm using a live version of the system
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
I tried running Steam for Linux on a live version of Pop!_OS, as my SSD with Linux is broken. After starting Steam up from the GNOME menu, it shows me the usual login screen, but the fonts are not rendered, every character is replaced by a box instead.
I tried installing fonts provided by Steam in the https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1974-YFKL-4947&l=english support tutorial, but it did not help. I also tried installing the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package, but nothing helped.
