After my shader cache problem https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8088 I cleared the Steam download cache. Since then, I have to login on every Steam launch.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Clear download cache
  2. Reload Steam
  3. Be forced to provide login details and 2FA every time

My only fix was a complete removal of Steam FYI. Then a totally fresh install.

@LiamDawe Reinstalling the Steam data fixed it for me as well. And it went much less painful than expected. Most settings were as before and no Windows games have been removed due to the fact Steam Play was not enabled for all titles.

Here is the workaround that worked for me (I'm not sure removing steam authenticator is mandatory)

  1. remove steam authenticator from steam app
  2. log in to steam manually, go to Settings, check "Don't save account credentials on this computer"
  3. exit steam
  4. log in to steam manually, go to Settings, uncheck "Don't save account credentials on this computer"
  5. exit steam
  6. log in to steam manually (1st improvement : "Remember my password" is pre-checked)
  7. exit steam
  8. log in to steam : normally you don't have to re-enter login / password !
  9. re-add steam authenticator
