System information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Built on Oct 13th 2021
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Debian 11
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Issue in as much detail as possible:

Launching the Steam client opens the client as usual but opens a Wine file browser window in .steam\ubuntu12_32 as well (see screenshot below). This window keeps reopening when closed, as long as the Steam client is launched.

Hello @julben, this reads like it's related to #8114. Can you tell what version of Proton is running when that window is spawned?

Hello @kisak-valve, I searched but, at first glance no other reported issue looked like mine ; sorry for opening a potential duplicate.

Steam's settings say this is Proton 6.3-7.

Edit: After taking a look in htop, I see that there is a customized Proton wineserver running from a manually installed Proton version (Proton-4.21-GE-2) when Steam is launched. SIGKILL it renders the file browser window unresponsive.

Edit 2: I forgot to mention that at launch, wineserver, pressure-vessel and steam-runtime processes were spawned by proton_explorer but not shader compiling occured contrary to #8114.

Edit 3: I removed this customized version of Proton and the proton_explorer window did not open afterwards.

Thanks for checking. Like #8146, the issue is a previously hidden quirk in the third party Proton build. Closing in favor of #8114.
