Same issue here, information about my display configuration: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/110.
Same issue, spawns on the wrong (left) monitor regardless of which is selected as primary (twinview/xinerama). TF2 does not exhibit that problem at all.

Confirm that.
My system configured to run games on primary monitor with resolution 1024x768 while secondary monitor turns off. But HL and CS run in native resolution ignoring video settings with huge and ugly fonts and menu items
Same problem here. I'm running a multi-head setup (no xinerama or twin view). Steam is running on display :0.2, HL start on display :0.0. I found no way to override this. The $DISPLAY variable is the right one in the HL process.
I too have this problem... I'm having to run it in window mode and move that to my desired screen
I'm surprised it's still here considering I reported this back when TF2 came out and they fixed it in TF2 and CSS
and why is this a feature request?
I would just like to add that the problem doesn't occur with the recentry release Counter-Strike: Source.

Getting this issue 10 years later on gnome wayland. This is some history right here
Same here, on KDE + xorg
But running game with Proton resolves this.
i am also getting this issue on gnome wayland
Please use the ValveSoftware/halflife issue tracker for feedback on Half-Life (1).
I have a secondary monitor to the left setup with nVidia graphics and HL1 launches and plays on the left monitor only, which is ergonomically unsuitable for gaming. Having choice as to which monitor to use would be ideal.
