Your system information

  • Steam client version: Oct 13 2021, at 19:47:24
  • Distribution: Arch and Manjaro both
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Install Arch, follow AMD graphics driver installation instruction (including 32 bit)
  2. Install Steam, install a game, launch it
  3. Error message: An error occured while updating "Game Name" (compatibility tool configuration failed). To see the error message, I started steam from terminal. For all failed games I see following (for games using Proton).
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1634158817)

These are the list of failed games I have tested.

  1. Yoku's Island
  2. Ageless
  3. Garfield Kart - Furious Racing
  4. Overcooked
  5. Real Pool 3D - Poolians
  6. Tekken 7
  7. Brawlhalla

Games that work without issues (The one I tested). Native games seems to work

  1. Terraria
  2. Stardew Valley
  3. American Truck Simulator
  4. Portal
  5. Joyspring

I was seeing same issue in my regular install. To validate this was consistent, I reinstalled Arch and saw same result after re-installation. Also, I tried liveusb version of Manjaro and installed Steam and loaded the games, same result.

Most of my games are loaded from microsd card (ext4). Preparing for SD :) . However, to make sure it was not the issue in microsd card, I uninstalled few games and installed them in my local drive. There was no change in the result. Since the games doesn't start at all, I could not see any log file with PROTON_LOG=1.

My laptop is Acer Aspire 5 (AMD). RAM 8G. In the past I have played Dota 2 (without much issues, when lowering settings as this is not very powerful laptop). I usually tend to play small games. However, above most of the games using Proton are not working.

I have tried with various versions of Proton (Experimental, 6.3-7 and 6.21-GE-1). In one instance Proton was installed in microsd card, but I removed those instances to installed them locally. Still no change. I have also tried to clean download cache, and verify integrity of game files, repair folder etc.

Finally, it seems to be working now. On the last setup, I found 2 message under Steam - System Information

"scout runtime container" is not installed
"soldier runtime container" is not installed

After some research, it seemed they were supposed to be installed in .steam folder (probably within proton).

Looks like, since last time Proton was installed on sdcard, it might have created some conflicts. I deleted .steam folder in couple of instances, and every time I was trying to load games first from sdcard. And even my local install was after first using sdcard.

This time, I cleaned all the steam folder under home directory. Started steam, and installed windows game on local drive without inserting the sdcard. Now, they seem to be working. Although, on this hardware I don't have much space, so cannot test big games.

Since last time, I also changed from lib32-vulkan-radeon to lib32-amdvlk, removed steam-native-runtime and installed wqy-zenhei. Although, I guess they won't matter. I had tested unigine-heaven on this. The problem might be with conflict between local and microsd card. Since, I have experimented with trying to get games working from another system to this with same microsd card, something have gotten messed up.

This time, probably I will format the sdcard before using it again.

One other thing, currently I am using lts kernel. Not sure, if that has any effect. I am still seeing

wine: RLIMIT_NICE is <= 20, unable to use setpriority safely

message. Last time on hardened kernel, I had set some parameters. And games were launching really slowly. However, this time despite that message the proton games are not launching too badly and the FPS seems reasonable on this particular hardware.

Currently I have tested Yoku's Island, Ageless and Real Pool 3D and all worked fine.
