Black Screen for Store, Library,... Freetype error on Debian Bullseye

  • freetype version: libfreetype6/stable,now 2.10.4+dfsg-1 amd64

Problem / Steps

  1. Installed via flathub
  2. Start via desktop-file
  3. Client installation via launcher
  4. Logged in
  5. Store, Library,... stay black.

If i start steam via terminal (flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam) i see following error messages if it reaches the black screens:
./steamwebhelper: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so.6: undefined symbol: hb_ot_tags_from_script_and_language

note: if i switch to beta, it works nicely. only non-beta has this problem for me.

This is not current: the beta and general-availability Steam client versions are currently both the same, 1637624439 (Nov 22 2021).

You should still be able to check for updates with Steam → Check for Steam Client Updates..., even when the steamwebhelper is not working.

It is expected that versions older than September will still suffer from #7935 if they have not been updated. We can't go back in time to fix those versions!

I switched with settings -> account.

i just reinstalled via flatpak and i got this version before reporting the problem. after switchting i got 1637624439.

You should still be able to check for updates with Steam → Check for Steam Client Updates..., even when the steamwebhelper is not working.

It shouldn't be possible to install the old version - or it should be updated automatically - at best :)
