Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): 1646806235
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Manjaro 21.2.4
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] yes
  • Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No] yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When trying to uninstall "Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier" while a Proton game is installed, it fails to uninstall with error Uninstall error - missing shared content (see screenshot below)

i know this may be a dependency issue if uninstalled, but i would need to sometimes re-install the tool (or something else) to have a fresh set of file to workaround something like https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-runtime/issues/495, because for example in that case "validate files" successfully exited without finding the problem

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. install Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier
  2. install a Proton game
  3. try to uninstall Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier

This is almost the same issue as #7407: that issue is about uninstalling Proton, while this one is about uninstalling the various Steam Linux Runtime compatibility tools. In both cases, the issue can be summarized as:

  • to reproduce: try to uninstall a compatibility tool that is needed by at least one installed game or compatibility tool
  • expected result: some sort of easily understandable error that mentions which game/tool needs it
  • actual result: the message in the UI is "missing shared content" which is not very clear
  • workaround: look in Steam's log output or in xdg-open steam://open/console to find out which games/tools need it
