When I launch TF2 on separate X on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, with command:
sudo X :3 -ac (or any other parameters I just mostly use these) then launch .keyfix bash file that fixes my keyboard and ck-launch-session
If TF2 is on fullscreen on 1366x768 resolution , I only get small cube in the middle of the screen at 640x480 resolution, and it is unplayable because mouse is limited to said cube however it acts like the entire screen wasn’t shrunk, I cannot click on menu buttons on where they are visible, but where they would be if resolution was 1366x768. Same in windowed except cube is in top left corner and mouse is moveable around entire screen however interaction is still limited to the visible area and clickable button locations are also out of place.
All other games work fine when run like this also Steam itself, but it's not necessary for games to work to run it in same X.
Specs:
ASUS laptop K53SV
Intel i5-2410M
Nvidia 540M and Intel HD 3000
6gb ram
drivers are from xedgers ppa also I am using bumblebee

Same here. It would be nice to have the option of running TF2 in an empty X server, so it doesn't have to wrestle with KWin for the graphics card.

Hi. For what it's worth, I routinely run games (steam included) in a separate X server by logging on an empty console and starting an openbox session. Then I just run Steam on that X server.

Thanks starting openbox worked.
