Half-Life only works properly with en_US or C locale for some reason. The game tries to force en_US on startup but produces annoying popup for those without en_US.UTF-8 locale.
Symptoms:
In the start of Unforseen consequences the screen is black.
The game confuses comma and dot when writing decimal values in config file. As a result mouse and sound might get broken.
