What happens if you shortly press the ALT key? This usually fixes it for me.
The problem's root for me is when I'm alt tabbing to the game and the ALT key event gets stuck.
I have tried pressing Alt, as well as switching to the desktop and back into the game. The only thing that seems to take effect is restarting the game. (in this case, Team Fortress 2)
Having the same issue. in Dynamite Jack on Xubuntu (1024x600).

Alt+Tab and Shift+Tab don't always work for me to escape; I'm forced to play the game in Windowed mode and chat outside of the game.
I chatted in the overlay in Dynamite Jack and had no problems. Are there any usual steps in the repro? I started the game, brought up the overlay, started a chat session and typed and the typing was normal, backspace and delete included.
Running Team Fortress 2, (as I don't own Dynamite Jack) it seems to happen at random, and the issue would appear to happen has I press shift+tab as it never seems to take effect randomly while I'm already typing. There's no specific set of circumstances to reproduce this as far as I know.
This is exactly what I did/do to replicate both issues:
I just found that when using the arrow pad on step 4b, I can actually scroll through open conversations. It may be related to the "phantom" keys (ctrl or alt), though there is absolutely no key that unlocks the correct key function.
I didn't have any problems after following those steps. Also, I can backspace even when holding shift in the chat text entry. Ctrl+backspace deletes a word and Alt+backspace appears to delete a single character so even if those keys were considered pressed it seems like backspace should do something. We'll have to keep digging.
Bug exists in cs 1.6 ubuntu 12.10.
Maybe this might be related to what I reported in #1509, similar issues after alt+tab.
I cant remember having problems in game but will try it out in a moment.

Seems to be related to alt + tab. Cant reproduce problem in game though as @Majkl578 had problems with.
I was finally able to repro, the next client should have a fix.
Did this improve with today's update?
Can no longer reproduce.

Fixed for me on Xubuntu 12.10 32-bit
Yep, seems to be fixed.
Thanks, closing.
The Steam Overlay doesn't allow deleting characters in chat windows, while it is still possible to type in them. Running Ubuntu 12.10 x64 with Unity.
