Same message with Half-Life Beta and CounterStrike Beta on my Desktop PC.
I've a dual monitor setup (details below) and the game (in fullscreen mode) always starts on the primary monitor (set as primary in X-Server configuration, resolution 1632x920 59.9 hz) and gives me: "Error initializing Main frame buffer"
WORKAROUND: Start the game in windowed mode. After this, I could start Half-Life and also start a "New game" from the menu.
HowTo: Open Steam => right-click on the game => choose properties => start options => add "-window"
(terms might not be very exactly, because I use the german version and just translated it)

same here. Intel video, Last Ubuntu.
Hello! It looks like the video-drivers (at least xf86-video-radeon) need support for MSAA, which is supported with kernel 3.7 or above. If you are using Ubuntu 12.10 this is a problem, because this release of Ubuntu will stick to kernel 3.5.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/838#issuecomment-12726612
I've upgraded my kernel manually to 3.7.4 and fullscreen works. See following link for needed steps:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds
Same problem here (I had a different problem until the most recent Steam update).
Running amd64 Gentoo linux w/ kernel 3.3.8, video card is an ATI FireGL V3700 using the proprietary drivers. 3D acceleration is confirmed to be working w/ past applications such as BZFlag.
Same here on Windows 8 with Half-Life SteamPipe Beta joined
On Linux 3.7.0 it doesn't work. Is it confirmed that I need 3.7.4 or higher?
Actually, kernel 3.7.4, Intel graphics, recently-installed Ubuntu, still same error.
MSAA seems to be supported only with IvyBridge. Or the user-space packages for Intel hardware are to old in Ubuntu 12.10?

I had this issue with the open source "radeon" driver for ATI Radeon cards. Looks like it does not support all required OpenGL functionality.
After installing the proprietary ATI calatyst driver the issue is gone.
Ubuntu 12.10 x86_64
Radeon HD6670
Same issue here with 12.04 LTS 64-bit, Nvidia 313.09 proprietary driver. Adding -window still results in a crash. Also, removing the "-window" option in steam doesn't change hl.conf. You have to edit hl.conf manually in order to change it back to full-screen mode. I'm totally stumped right now, and it's rather disappointing since I was just playing Half-Life 1 on this system flawlessly two days ago.
So I tried playing TF2 for the heck of it, and it gave me the error message "could not find required opengl entry point "glGetError"" I google it and the first thread I found was on steampowered.com regarding catalyst drivers and generic opengl problems, mostly related to not having a properly installed driver. In my case, though I had the DKMS kernel enabled, for whatever reason when I did my last Ubuntu upgrade, the driver did not build properly. My system said it was running, but I distinctly remember having a gray screen for a few seconds before seeing my Unity desktop after that upgrade. So, I did a quick Ctrl+Alt+F1, sudo service lightdm stop; cd Downloads; sudo ./NVIDyouknowtherestfromhere
Half-LIfe is now working like a champ again. I hope this helps someone. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Running 3.7.4 with Arch Linux. Same Error!
Ok, I'm able to run the game. Right click on Half-Life in Library -> Properties -> Set Launch Options to
-windowed
The next release will contain a change that will fallback to changing your desktop resolution in the case it can't create a FBO. This means you have an old video card or bad/faulty drivers, so I expect the experience won't be great, but at least with this change you can run something.
I can confirm -windowed did it for me on Intel graphics, Ubuntu 12.10, better than nothing, right?
Hello there ! Old Counter-Strike addict here ! SORRY FOR BAD ENGLISH, NOT MY MOTHERTONGUE
I've just insalled steam on my MacBook, old bike.
I've the same error message when I try to launch the game.
I try to add "-windowed" to the launch option, but it didn't works... Now I have " The application has unexpectedly quit " (classical Mac error window).
That's my config : CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE, I'LL BE GLAD TO HS SOME DUDE ON DUST2 TONIGHT :-)

I have installed CS 1.6 (not stand-alone) and HL1 on my older MSI Wind U100 Netbook under a freshly updated Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit running the default Unity desktop environment.
When I try to start CS1.6 or HL1 I get the error
