As soon as the SteamVR window appears steam will exit/crash.
This is a recent problem which began with a recent steam update.
Here is a steam console log: steam.log
Steps for reproducing this issue:
start steam
start SteamVR from within steam
wait for the SteamVR window to appear and steam's windows to disappear
