The new Big Picture mode is not working correctly (collection of problems)

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

The new Big Picture mode has the following problems i have encountered:

  • Does not actually launch full-screen
  • when not full-screen, it does not open on the correct display (probably opens at 0x0?)
  • when trying to launch a game the window just crashes and re-starts with the opening animation and drops me back at the main-menu
  • open way too many windows

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Start Steam in normal mode
  2. Enter (the new) Big Picture mode
  3. observe not being full screen
  4. observe many windows in the taskbar
  5. try to open a game by selecting it and pushing A on the controller (in my case XBox One Wireless (Wired) or any other way to open the game to show the "Play" button)
  6. observe the big picture window showing the "Play" button for a short time and then resetting to the start-up animation and dropping back to the main-menu

all mentioned issues seem to be fixed in the latest (beta) version, which currently is Jan 31 2023, at 19:10:17
