Your system information

  • Steam client version (build number or date): Dec 15 2022, at 21:27:25
  • Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Arch Linux
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: No
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

What happens: FSync in wine is not usable by other apps if steam is open and idling.
What I Expect: Steam can be open and idling and i can open other wine apps that use fsync.

While steam is running, but no games are actively playing, its just at the library page and the contact list is open. Other applications that may need to use the WINEFSYNC feature fail with a message like this:

Failed to open fsync shared memory file; make sure no stale wineserver instances are running without WINEFSYNC.

If I close steam, these apps can properly utilize fsync. If I open steam while these apps are running, everything continues to be ok. But if at some point those apps close and i come back to them later, while steam is open, I am met with the same problem

In my use case, I have Steam open for some hours, days, etc. Sometimes I want to play a game on EGS, so I open heroic and try to play and am met with the error above. If I close steam, this problem vanishes and I can play an EGS game through heroic normally.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Open steam (it may need to be open for a while before opening the second, non steam app)
  2. Open another app that uses fsync in wine.
  3. Other app fails if steam is open.

Hello @allora, this issue should also be mentioned to the wine devs.

This is specifically steam's fault however.. without steam running, there are no issues. SO steam specifically is doing something other programs do not. This also recently started happening, it didnt used to be an issue.
